More Than Human

Melody dropped the books she had collected from Gretta’s purse on the bed and fell face-first on the pillows next to them. There were still a few patrons downstairs lingering, and from what she gathered from Chuck on her way in, there would be a couple more as the bars closed down. They would be up most of the night.

She had avoided Tonac. She didn’t want him to see her with the books. Why she felt like she had to hide them, she wasn’t sure. She just knew she should.

Now that the comfort of the bed surrounded her, she didn’t want to read. She was exhausted and scared. She wasn’t sure she wanted to know. Whatever or whoever was playing the music, Dion said had no clue where it had come from, and wouldn’t tell her who he thought it was. Melody had prodded him for a while for answers, but he kept insisting she take off. Finally Gretta, who had been in the crowd of watchers on shore, grabbed her by the arm and practically dragged her away.

Melody fell asleep fully-clothed where she’d fallen. At some point she thought she heard a knock, only she was half awake and she wondered if it was a dream. Then she felt someone removing the flats that were still on her feet, and carefully moving her to one side of the bed. She could smell Tonac, the heady mix of spices and herbs that follows him from the kitchen. She felt him moving onto the bed next to her, lying on top of the blankets. She rolled over so she could look at him on his side, watching her. Time seemed to stop as Melody gazed at him and he gazed back. She wanted to kiss him. It had felt like a million years since she’d done so. But she was nervous. Was it okay to kiss him? Had the crazy moment where Tonia had interrupted them ruined kissing forever? Would she return if they kissed again?

As if seeing the struggle on her face, Tonac leaned over, his lips brushing her own as he moved closer. She felt something pointed and hard press into her stomach. Tonac backed up, feeling around in the covers. It took Melody a moment to realize what he held up in his hand. A book.

“Where did you find this?” Tonac asked. His tone was different. Was he angry?

“I was at the library and they just appeared on the shelf. Dion did it, but I’m not sure how.”

Tonac sat up and fished around and found the others. “He shouldn’t have given you these.” He stood up, putting the books under his arm.

“Tonac?”

She turned away to haul herself up. When she faced the room again, he was gone, and so were the books.

Melody had never had much experience with guys, although she’d had her run-ins with them.

It wasn’t until high school that Melody finally managed to kiss a few boys. She’d fooled around a few times in
